I think you should listen to your husband. If the Sportster is the most comfortable bike, get it. If you don't feel comfortable with the bike you will never ride it.
Maybe instead of getting a cruiser, you should be more concerned with getting something light. Take a look through the local paper: maybe you can find a Rebel 250, a Honda CB250, or a Honda CM200. These are nice light bikes that are very easy for a beginner to ride. You should be able to pick up a used one.
